The World Health Organization spread the results of a research led in 2015, and according to it, people suffeering of depression in the world are about 300.000.000; the 12,49 % of them live in Europe, 5 % in Italy. A great number, destined to grow up. The direct costs for the National Health System are about 4,000 € per patient per year; the indirect ones (i.e. lost working hours) are much more higher.
20 years after the publication of the book-interview “Date parole al dolore”, in which the journalist Stefania Rossini interviews Mr Cancrini on this topic, we want to assess the situation with him to understand if and what steps ahead there have been in the diagnosis and cure of depression.
All, from the field’s experts to the media, send an alarm on the diffusion of this disease and the need to find solutions.
In this almost usual chat with Mr Cancrini we look closer to the solutions chosen so far, that unfortunately have been often useless, when not damaging.
We ask ourselves about the clinical implications of a persistent systematic approach in the treatment of depression and on which consequences have had on the collective imagination, this medical approach of the specialists. Starting from the definition, simple but revolutionary at the same time, that the professor gave in that interview, we try to look closer this “danger” from which often we try to run away rather than listen to it, that too often has been victim of a clinic reductionism, that considered as equivalent all the forms of depression and treated them like these.
Professor Cancrini again reminded us to reduce the distance between us and the pain, because only if we would be good “grief’s mates” we will be able to help our patients in their healing’s process.
